Lebanon: Located in the Middle East, Lebanon is a country on the Eastern coast of the Mediterranean. Its strategic location between three continents, Asia, Africa, and Europe, makes it a link between East and West. The first alphabet ever known arose from the Phoenicians, the first settlers in this nation, and from Byblos, one of the oldest cities in the world.

For centuries, Lebanon was distinguished as an independent political entity that maintained its autonomy even as numerous empires invaded its land. It was often referred to as the land of freedom and intellectual asylum of the Middle East. In 1943, Lebanon gained its independence from the French. In 1948, it was a founding member of the United Nations and one of the first to ratify the International Charter of Human Rights. The capital is Beirut.
